Are You Living by the Spirit?

Friday, January 05, 2018

“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” (Gal. 5.25)

To live by the spirit is to “keep in step with the spirit,” “walk by the spirit,” (Gal. 5.16) or be “led by the Spirit” (5.18). To walk by the spirit is to “not gratify the desires of the flesh” for the spirit is against the flesh (5.16-17) and those who belong to Jesus have put sin (the flesh with its passions and desires) to death (5.24). Elsewhere Paul said, “So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” (Rom. 8.12-13)

Are you living by the Spirit? Are you practicing “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, [and] self-control” (5.22-23). Paul taught, “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” (Rom. 8.14)

Have You Put on the New Man?

Tuesday, August 08, 2017

“We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin” (Romans 6.6, ESV).

_____________

The Bible calls all who have been born again to put the old man of sin to death and to put on the new man of righteousness (see Eph. 4.22, 24; Col. 3.9-10).

Paul taught that this putting off and putting on happens in baptism. Notice: “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin” (Rom. 6.3-6).

It is only when we are raised with Christ after being buried with Him that we can “walk in newness of life” having put off our “old self”.

If you have not been baptized into Christ Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins, then you are still lost in sin. Choose today to put off that old man of sin “and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” (Eph. 4.24)!

Let Jesus Set You Free!

Tuesday, July 11, 2017

“Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.’” (John 8.34-36, ESV)

Someone once said, “So long as a person is convinced He has no problem, He will seek no solution.” Therefore, people do not come to Jesus for forgiveness (the solution) because they do not believe they have a sin-problem.

However, the Bible teaches, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3.23, ESV). If you’re reading this, more than likely you have sinned (transgressed God’s law) and need salvation. Sin is the problem. Jesus’ cleansing blood is the answer. Since life is in the blood (Lev. 17.11) and death is because of sin (Rom. 6.23), choose life today! Choose to obey Jesus to be washed in His precious blood that saves (1 Peter 1.18-19, 22-23).

Obey Jesus today by being baptized upon your faith, repentance of sins, and confession of faith: “And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.” (Acts 22.16)

What’s Your Excuse to Continue in Sin?

Wednesday, May 24, 2017

“Judge not, that you be not judged.” (Matthew 7.1, ESV)¹

_____________________________________

¹Too often people stop with verse one of Matthew chapter seven. It is as if they do not know that verses 2-6 even exist. Jesus’ point is that if we are going to judge someone, we must make sure the log has been taken out of our eye before focusing on the speck in our brother’s eye. That is how we judge with righteous judging (John 7.24). Additionally, God’s word has already made the judgments. Those who teach sinners to obey Jesus are simply restating what God has already stated in His word and has authorization to do so (Mark 16.15; Matt. 28.19; etc.).

Below are some ways people use Matthew 7.1 along with the translation.

  • "Only God can judge me" translation "leave me alone so I can sin".
  • "You don't know my heart" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."
  • "We all sin" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."
  • "God knows my heart" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."
  • "Don't push your religion on me" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."
  • "I thought Jesus said, 'Don't judge'" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."
  • "Don't cast stones" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."
  • "You are judging" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."
  • "God is love" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."
  • "That's your interpretation" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."
  • "Why do you care?" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."
  • "No one likes a Bible thumper" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."
  • "Don't talk to me about religion" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."
  • "You have a holier than thou attitude" translation "leave me alone so I can sin."

What’s your excuse to continue in sin? If you want to be left alone so you can continue in sin, then God will leave you alone after the judgment.

Are You a Friend of the World?

Monday, May 22, 2017

“You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (James 4.4, ESV)¹

_______________________________________

¹God has called us to take advantage of His love and to enjoy His blessings. However, we sometimes find ourselves enjoying evil desires and worldly pleasures - this causes us to become friends with the world - loving the world and its ways. Our decision to reject God’s love not only hurts our Creator and heavenly Father, but we choose to make ourselves enemies of Him. This choice will cause one to suffer eternally in hell.

John said, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2.15-17, ESV).

If you want to abide forever with God e-mail Bryan Garlock, message us on Facebook, or text 903.308.4905.
